Vernier is a municipality in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland.

Geography

Vernier is located north of the Rhone. The neighboring municipalities are Satigny, Meyrin, Le Grand- Saconnex and Geneva.

In the district of Le Lignon, the two tallest buildings in the canton and the longest residential building in Europe, which is 1060 meters long. Originally created in the 1960s for 10,000 people live there today about 5,500 people. A second, with 5700 inhabitants, today hardly smaller residential development, Les Avanchets is.

Vernier is connected by a trolley bus to Geneva public transport from Geneva.

Vernier is the second largest city of the canton of Geneva. 45 % of the population are foreign nationals. 61 % of all inhabitants have a foreign passport (47% plus 14 % foreigners dual citizen ). From the Swiss, 13% are naturalized. Of the foreigners, 12% of Portuguese and 12 % of Italian origin. 38% of residents there are by birth a Swiss citizen.

History

Until 1815 Vernier belonged to France.
