Vesuvius Observatory

The Vesuvius Observatory ( Osservatorio Vesuviano ) is a scientific institute for the study and observation of volcanological and geophysical processes and for monitoring of volcanoes. Its tasks include in particular the observation of areas of Campania with active volcanism ( Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Ischia ).

The observatory is by the Italian Ministry for Education and Research ( MIUR ) operated as part of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and financed. His duties also include reporting of threatening events to the authority for civil protection and disaster relief; for this purpose it maintains a constantly occupied in Naples monitoring center.

The building dates back to 1841 on the slopes of Vesuvius a museum and laboratories and a library are housed.
