Vi Redd

Elvira " Vi " Redd, married Elvira Redd Goldberg, ( born September 20, 1928 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz singer and alto saxophonist ( and Tenorsaxophonistin ).

Life and work

Vi Redd is the daughter of New Orleans jazz drummer and singer Alton Redd, who had a strong influence at the beginning of their musical career. Another important mentor was her great-aunt Alma Hightower, who also organized at the high school, a band in which Melba Liston was also. She has performed in the jazz scene of the Central Avenue of Los Angeles. She played from 1954 to 1956 as a professional musician, among others, Dick Hart. After working as a music teacher 1957-60, she returned to the music scene back, concerted, 1962 in Las Vegas at the Jazz Festival, 1964 with Earl Hines. The mid-1960s, she led in San Francisco with her husband, drummer Richie Goldberg his own band, a quartet; In addition, she worked with Max Roach. During this time, she went on tours to Japan, London ( where she had, inter alia, a ten- week engagement at Ronnie Scott's ), Sweden, Spain and Paris.
