Due to the strategic location and proximity to Pisa is also the place and its economy developed. After the defeat of Pisa, who practiced since 1230 a strong influence on Vicopisano, against Florence in 1406 the city came under the rule of the Duchy of Tuscany, where it remained until a few exceptions ( 1494-1498 ) and ( 1502-1503 ) until the unification of Italy. 1434 Rocca di Vicopisano, also Rocca del Brunelleschi or Rocca Nuova was called, built by Filippo Brunelleschi.
