History

The first "street" in Victoria was built two hundred years ago in 1801, by European settlers at Phillip Iceland. Until 1851, with the independence of Victoria, was responsible for the management New South Wales. The gold rush and the associated sharp increase in traffic, led in 1853 to a first law, which aimed to improve roads and expand. From 1857 to 1913 was responsible for the road the Board of Land and Works, whose priority but rather was on expanding the rail network. The lack of a central coordinating body thus creating a patchwork of different road systems that were mostly built and maintained by local authorities. With the engine size of the vehicles and the resulting traffic growth, an independent authority, the Country Roads Board ( CRB) was launched in 1913 again. She led a classification of roads through and then initiated and financed roads for inter-regional connections, the so-called State Highways in the year 1924. 1974 was the hitherto independent Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works, the Highway Authority Melbourne, the CRB affiliated.

With the renaming of the 1983 Road Traffic CRB Authority ( RCA) and the merger with the Road Traffic Authority (RTA ), responsible for the regulation of traffic and driving licenses in 1989 and the resulting Roads Corporation created the Authority today is better known under the name of VicRoads.
