Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra

The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra is a major Austrian orchestra.

History

After the 2nd World War in 1945, Max Schönherr (Conductor, composer, arranger ) with only 50 musicians orchestra for radio traffic Aktiengesellschaft " RAVAG ", later Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, together. In this form it also played together with the choir of the Vienna Schubert Federal, March 7, 1947, the premiere of a new Austrian national anthem. Max Schönherr conducted the Vienna Radio Orchestra, which later became " The Great Vienna Radio Orchestra " was, for 23 years. As the orchestra was increasingly entrusted with symphonic music, the name was changed to " Great Orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ". The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO Wien) was in 1969 by the Great Orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ( ORF) produced. From 1969 to 1996 it was called the ORF Symphony Orchestra. In 1996 it was renamed the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, in February 2009 re- renamed ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna or ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Native to the orchestra is at the radio station Vienna, orchestra manager is Christian Scheib.

Program

The program focus of the orchestra is in addition to the typical duties of a radio orchestra, the performance of contemporary music. The orchestra expanded its repertoire since 1969 continuously from pre-classical to avant-garde.

From 1 September 2002 to August 30, 2010 Bertrand de Billy was chief conductor. Under his leadership, the orchestra became one of the leading ensembles in Austria. In addition to concert series at the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Musikverein in Vienna affects the RSO Vienna as a regular guest at the major festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Carinthian Summer Villach, musikprotokoll / Styrian Autumn in Graz, Vienna Festival and Vienna Modern, OsterKlang and sound arch and is an opera orchestra in the theater an der Wien.

Since 2007, the orchestra in the Great Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus plays at the annual Film Music Gala " Hollywood in Vienna " Contemporary art of film music.
