Vientiane Prefecture

The Vientiane Prefecture ( Lao ນະ ຄອນ ຫຼວງ ວຽງ ຈັນ, Nakhon Luang Vieng Chan) is an administrative unit in northwestern Laos. The capital of the prefecture is also the state capital: Vientiane.

History

In 1989, the Vientiane Province was split into two parts, the Vientiane prefecture, which contained, among other things, the capital of Vientiane, as well as the rest of the territory, the Vientiane Province.

Geography

The Vientiane Prefecture is located in the northwest of the country. The neighboring provinces are (from west clockwise): Vientiane ( province ) and Bolikhamsai.

To the south the Mekong forms the border to Thailand. On the opposite bank lies the Thai province of Nong Khai.

Traffic

In the prefecture is the first Thai - Lao Friendship Bridge at the border crossing to Thailand as well as the railway line Nong Khai - Vientiane and the Thanaleng station. It is also home leading to Bangkok highway AH12 of the Asian Highways Project.
