Villa Boscoreale

Villa Boscoreale is the name of a villa, which was excavated at the foot of Mount Vesuvius near Naples in the village of Boscoreale. It was built 50-40 BC over the years and was the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD preserved. They probably belonged to Publius Fannius synistor. In contrast to the elaborate luxury villas ( villae urbanae ) the same time, the Villa Boscoreale represents the type of an agricultural villa rustica, which specialized in viticulture. The villa comprises, among other things, a wine press and a large Gärhof, were buried in the Tonfässer into the ground.

In the northern part of the villa was the comfortably furnished living area of the villa owner as well as the kitchen and bath rooms. In the bedroom ( cubicle ) the murals are best preserved. Here are three elements of the mural are processed:

  • Landscape Painting - illustration free nature
  • Temple Architecture - Illustration of a round temple, perhaps a temple of Venus
  • Urban architecture - houses and gates

These three elements can be the three ancient dramas - satyr play, tragedy and comedy - assign. Masks reinforce this assumption.

In Oecus ( dining room) are Megalographien, but they are obtained only in fragments. These are comparable with those of the Mysteries Villa.
