Vinsobres

Vinsobres is a municipality with 1144 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the south of France in the department of Drôme (Drôme Provençale ) in the Rhône-Alpes region, about 8 km west of Nyons.

The origin of the place name is not unique to clarify. However, the old Gallic name Vintiobriga could be composed of the parts of vins for wind and briga for mountain fortress. Vinsobres would thus mean about " windy mountain fortress ".

Culture and sights

The oldest building in the village is the location superb Priory from the 12th century. It was particularly vulnerable to the turmoil of the French religious history and its affiliation changed several times between Protestants and Catholics. Today it is a "temple" (Fr. temple ) of the Reformed Church. From its courtyard, the view goes far beyond the Eygues valley to Mont Ventoux.

The Catholic church in the village in the town center was built in 1685-1710. You inside hosts a magnificent chandelier from the 18th century.

Economy and infrastructure

Vinsobres situated in the traditional olive-growing area around Nyons. So here was the olive growing for a long time in the foreground. However, this changed with the severe frosts of 1929 and 1956.
