Vlaardingen

( Listen? / I ) Vlaardingen is a town and a municipality in the Netherlands, South Holland province. Their total area is approximately 36.7 km ². Vlaardingen had 2013 70.889 inhabitants on 1 January.

Location and economic

Vlaardingen is located on the north bank of the canal New Waterway between Rotterdam and the North Sea. The municipality is bordered to the northwest by Westland, on the west by Maassluis and east to Schiedam. It lies on the railway line between Hoek van Holland - Rotterdam and on the motorways of the Rotterdam port area Europoort and after Maassluis.

Has Vlaardingen because of its proximity to the port of Rotterdam a lot of industry, especially metal processing plants and chemical plants. Also, transport and other logistics companies have their headquarters in the town of Vlaardingen also has a number of research laboratories. The city has many schools and a large hospital.

History

Between 3500 and 2500 BC, there were people of the Neolithic period. See: Vlaardingen culture. Around 800 AD, St. Willibrord is said to have converted to Christianity a short Friesen previously settled group.

The Count of Holland Dietrich III. left here in 1018 to build an attachment, was charged by the customs of (see: Battle of Vlaardingen ). The hinterland, Schieland was in 1250 completely diked (see: Schiedam ).

Vlaardingen received its town charter in 1273 and since then until about 1950, a very important harbor deep-sea fishing fleet. How Schiedam Vlaardingen after 1950 benefited from the upturn in the Rotterdam harbor while the North Sea fishermen set elsewhere or operation einstellten.

Attractions

In the city center there are several historic buildings from the 16th, 17th and 18th century, including the Great Church with a city scale, and the town hall.

There are in Vlaardingen several small museums, including the Museum Vlaardingen, formerly called Fishing Museum, which is located in a stately mansion from the 18th century and is currently closed for remodeling.
