Vladimír Špidla

Vladimír Špidla [ vladjimi ː r ʃpidla ] ( born April 22, 1951 in Prague) is a Czech politician ( CSSD ).

Life

After a study and a doctorate in history and prehistory at the Charles University in Prague he earned his living, among other things as a sawmill worker, archaeologist and stagehand. After the political changes of 1989, he was deputy head of the district office in Jindřichův Hradec and from 1991 director of the labor office. In 1989, he was in the Czech Social Democratic Party ( CSSD ) politically active.

From 1996 he was Member of Parliament, 1997, he became deputy chairman of the party, from 1998 labor minister in the cabinet of Miloš Zeman. As of April 2001, he went to his successor as Chairman of the Social Democratic Party. Since July 2002 Špidla was Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and led a coalition government of Social Democrats, Christian Democrats and the Freedom Union. After the defeat of his party in the elections to the European Parliament and intra-party conflicts, he joined on 26 June 2004 from his office, and was succeeded by former Interior Minister Stanislav Gross.

In October 2010 Spidla a candidate in elections to the Senate, the second chamber of parliament. He was defeated - despite an overall pretty good performance of the CSSD - in the constituency Český Krumlov in the ballot but the candidate of the ODS.
