Volosovo, Volosovsky District, Leningrad Oblast

Wolossowo (Russian Волосово ) is a city in the northwestern Russian Leningrad Oblast. She has (October 14, 2010 Balance ) 12,161 inhabitants.

Geography

The city is located about 85 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Saint Petersburg.

Wolossowo is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Wolossowo was created after the construction of the railway line St. Petersburg -Tallinn 1870 as the country house estate.

1937 the location of the status of an urban-type settlement and on 14 April 1999 was granted a city charter.

Culture and sights

In Wolossowo is the made-up as a museum former country residence of the painter and writer Nikolai Roerich ( Nicholas Roerich, 1874-1947 ).

In the village of Klopizy Rajons Wolossowo the Peter and Paul's Church stands ( церковь Петра и Павла / Tserkov Petra i Pawla ). In the village Torossowo the former country seat of Baron Pyotr Wrangel and Generals is obtained in the village Kaskowo the building of the old coaching inn. In the village Raskulizy, a former country estate and the Saviour's Transfiguration Church are ( Преображенская церковь / Preobraschenskaja Tserkov ).

From the 3rd to the 1st millennium BC originates a series of grave mounds in the area.

Economy and infrastructure

In Wolossowo there are companies in the timber industry and the wood industry, the building materials industry ( limestone ) and the food industry.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1870 Saint Petersburg- Tallinn ( kilometer 84).

By Wolossowo the regional road R38 Gatchina - Opolje leads ( at Kingissepp ).
