Walter Brandmüller

Walter Cardinal Brandmüller ( born January 5, 1929 in Ansbach ) is a German theologian, church historian and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was 1998-2009 president of the Pontifical Committee of Historical Sciences ( " chief historian of the Curia ").

Life

Brandmüller was born in 1929 in a Protestant officer's family in Ansbach and studied for his conversion to Catholicism Catholic theology. He received July 26, 1953 in Bamberg by Archbishop Joseph Otto Kolb ordination. He then worked as a chaplain in Kronach and Bamberg parish of St. Martin. It was 1963 - a PhD at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich with a thesis on The rebirth of Catholic communities in the principalities of Ansbach and Bayreuth - according to a doctoral program at Hermann Tüchle to which he had been exempted by Archbishop Josef Schneider. At the same place he was also his habilitation in 1967 with a dissertation on the Council of Pavia -Siena. On October 30, 1969, he was appointed professor at the then- philosophical-theological university of Dillingen. After the dissolution of the university teachers came on October 7, 1970 in Augsburg, where he taught until his retirement in 1997 as Professor of Modern and Medieval Church History at the University of Augsburg. During his tenure he oversaw the Parish of the Assumption Walleshausen.

Since the Habilitation, the focus of his scientific work is on the history of the councils. So Brandmüller co-founder and editor of the journal Annuarium historiae conciliorum (Paderborn, since 1969, with some supplements ) and the series of councils ( 2 rows, since 1979, so far 37 volumes). The Festschrift also dedicated to him under this title. In addition, he edited the Handbook of the Bavarian Church History ( St. Ottilia, 1991-1999, 3 volumes).

He was a member of the Pontifical Commission of historical sciences, since 1998, president of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences in Rome from 1998 to 2006, President of the International Commission for Comparative church history. Since 1981

In these positions, he coordinated international scientific cooperation between historians and academies of science that deal with church history topics. Focal points were the case, Galileo Galilei, and the Council of Constance and the First Vatican Council. Brandmüller lectured at the Institute of Universal History, Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei ( " Academy of the Lynxes " ) in Rome and at the German Historical Institute in Paris. In 2009, he went into retirement and handed the presidency, the PCSS to Bernard Ardura.

Priest

Walter Brandmüller is a priest of the Archdiocese of Bamberg, also canon of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican.

On July 17, 1983, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness and in 1997 the title of Apostolic prothonotary.

In 1981 he was appointed by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilian Cardinal von Furstenberg Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem and invested on 14 November 1981 at the Cologne Cathedral by Franz Hengsbach, Grand Prior of the Order.

Since April 2006 Brandmüller is a member of the Catholic fraternity KAV Capitolina in Rome in the CV.

Cardinal

In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi in the College of Cardinals.

Due to its age - Brandmüller the time of its Kreierung cardinal older than 80 years old - he was not eligible to vote in the conclave of 2013. Cardinal Brandmüller celebrated 15 May 2011 for the first time since the liturgical reforms of 1969/70 a Pontifical Mass in the extraordinary rite at one of the two main altars of St. Peter, the Altar of the Chair of Peter.

Honors

On 22 July 1990 Walter Brand Müller was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
