Warren Miller (political scientist)

Warren Edward Miller ( born March 26, 1924 in Hawarden, Iowa; † January 30, 1999 in Scottsdale, Arizona ) was an American political scientist and pollsters. He served from 1956 to 1981 as a professor at the University of Michigan and from 1982 until his death at Arizona State University. In 1960 he published jointly with other authors under the title "The American Voter ": a study of individual voting behavior in political elections in the United States, which is considered one of the most important works of electoral research.

Life

Warren Miller was born 1924 in Hawarden, Iowa. After he had done a 1943-1946 army service in the United States Army Air Forces, he studied at the University of Oregon, where he received his BA in 1948 and two years later earned his master's degree. In 1954 he earned his doctorate at Syracuse University. His doctoral work was based upon research which he in a project the group of Angus Campbell on Survery Research Center at the University of Michigan conducted in 1951, and formed the basis for the 1954 published book "The Voter Decides ." He was then in 1954, first assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, before becoming Assistant Professor returned in 1956 to the University of Michigan, where he in 1958 as an associate professor, from 1963 as a professor and from 1981 as Arthur -W. Bromage, professor of political science functioned.

In 1960 he published jointly with Angus Campbell, Philip E. Converse, and Donald E. Stokes in the work " The American Voter ", which was based on an analysis of individual voting behavior of voters in presidential and congressional elections in the United States and up to the present as one of the most influential works of electoral research is considered. At the University of Michigan in 1962, he founded the Inter- University Consortium for Political and Social Research ( ICPSR ), as its director, he served until 1970. In the same year he took over as head of the Center for Political Studies, which includes both the ICPSR also the co-founder of Miller 1977 American National Election Studies and other projects. In the years 1979/1980 he served as president of both the American Political Science Association and the Social Science History Association. In 1982 he moved to Arizona State University, where he worked until his death as professor.

Warren Miller died in 1999 from the effects of long-standing diabetes. He was married at the time of his death, his second wife and one son and one daughter. At the University of Michigan he contributes to commemorate a political science chair his name. The American Political Science Association gives beyond a scholarship named after him in the field of electoral research, the ICPSR has awarded since 1993, Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service in the social sciences.
