Washington Hunt

Washington Hunt ( * August 5, 1811 in Windham, Greene County, New York, † February 2nd 1867 in New York City ) was an American politician and 1851-1853 Governor of the State of New York. Between 1843 and 1849 he represented his state as a deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and political rise

In 1818, Washington Hunt came with his parents to Portage in Livingston County. There, he finished his schooling. After a subsequent law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1834. Then he started in Lockport to work in his new profession.

Hunt was a member of the Whig party. In 1836 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in Congress. From 1836 to 1841 he was judge of the Appeal Court in Niagara County. Between March 4, 1843 to March 3, 1849, he represented for three terms of office as a candidate of the Whigs his state House of Representatives in Washington. There he was since 1847 Chairman of the Trade Committee. In 1848, he did not campaign for the Congress. From 1849 to 1850 Hunt was the head of the Court of New York (State Comptroller ).

Governor of New York and other CV

On November 5, 1850 Washington Hunt was elected as the new governor of his state. This office he held between 1 January 1851 to 1 January 1853. During this time, the infrastructure of the state was further improved by the building of roads and waterways. One problem was the inclusion of the many immigrants in those years the company dar. In 1852 he was defeated in the gubernatorial election against Horatio Seymour. Then he withdrew for a time from politics.
