Wattasid dynasty

The Wattasids (Arabic وطاسيون, DMG Waṭṭāsīyūn ) was a Muslim Berber dynasty. As regent of the last Sultan Meriniden they took over in the 1420s, de facto power in Morocco, which they - completely independent from 1472 - dominated until their own downfall by the Saadian 1554.

The Banu Ouattas ( بنو وطاس / Banū Waṭṭās ) were Zanata - Berber and related to the Marinids. In the 13th century they were pulled from Tripolitania far as eastern Algeria, where they had settled. The Meriniden the Wattasids soon gained influence and were able, after the fall of Abu Inan Faris ( 1358 ) secure their dominant position. Even if they did not eliminate the dynasty of Marinids, their rulers were still completely dependent on the Wattasids. After Abdalhaqq II (1421-1465) had operated unsuccessfully to overthrow the Wattasids, won this 1472 Mohammed al -Mahdi oh - Chaykh the rule in Morocco.

The Wattasids succeeded despite the disempowerment of Marinids no pacification of Morocco. Their authority over the Bedouin and Berber tribes was only slight. The conquest of the ports on the Atlantic Ocean by the Portuguese could not be prevented. With Portugal even a truce for 20 years had to be closed after they had conquered in 1471 Tangier. Also, some of the principalities and Marinids Idrisids in the Rif mountains for a long time could not be subjected.

In opposition to the policy of Wattasids powerless against Portugal built in southern Morocco Saadian under Cherif Abu Abdallah al - Qaim (1505-1517) its own sphere of influence, as the basis for the fight against the Portuguese on. Although the Saadian could be temporarily stopped by the Wattasids under the regent Bou Hassoun, but they won by their successful struggle against the Portuguese broad support in the population and conquered Fez 1549, bringing the rule of Wattasids was terminated.
