Weightlifting at the 2008 Summer Olympics
The XXIX. 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing 15 competitions were held in weightlifting. There are 170 men and 90 women, a total of 260 athletes participated in these competitions.

At the start were 14 athletes from 11 countries, of which three athletes the competition could not finish. Chen Xiexia was able to set a new Olympic record in the jerk and in the total.
Class up to 53 kg

At the start, there were nine athletes. The Thai Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon was able to set a new Olympic record, even though they failed in world record attempt. She was joined in pushing first in the competition, as all competitors had already finished it. In the battle for two ultimately decided the lower body weight for Jinhee Joon.

Quota places
At the World Championships in 2006 and 2007, each association could win quota places for competitions in Beijing. The won quota places, the organizations then distribute to the individual weight classes, with a maximum of two athletes per weight class. Organizations that have not yet won any quota places can this create in continental precipitations and gain upon successful cutting a total of two or a place.
