History

The story of Welzheim dates back to the time of the Roman Empire: To 150 AD, the Romans built here in the course of the construction of the border plant the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes Kastellort with a civilian settlement. The oldest written reference dates from the year 1181 as " Wallenzin ", also called " Wallinzin ". Later forms of the name are then ( in 1355 ) " Wallenzingen " 1446 " Rollers" 1473 " Walzan, " thereto " Welnze " and " Welzen ".

After the departure of the Romans is the history of settlement in the dark. In 1266 Welzheim received its town charter. The place was later referred to as a village or market town. The award of the city law was confirmed on 13 May 1840.

On September 5, 1726 a second major fire disaster destroyed again almost the whole city. The church burned down to the ground; it was built in the sequence again. The town hall was rebuilt in 1731.

The poet Justinus Kerner lived 1812-1816 in Welzheim. From 1807 until the formation of the county of Waiblingen in 1938 - with an interruption from 1810 to 1819, as the seat of the Upper Office was moved to Lorch - was Welzheim fit for the top office Welzheim and until 1977 also a church district of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Württemberg.

During the period of National Socialism, there were often euphemistically referred to as " police prison " in the city's detention camp Welzheim until today. The most prominent prisoner there may have been a Communist and trade unionist Friedrich Schlotterbeck, who belonged to the resistance group Schlotterbeck from Luginsland. Approximately 10,000-15,000 prisoners have passed through the camp. At the cemetery, there are buried there 35 concentration camp victims, a memorial stone to the action.

In Breitenfürst has on the evening of May 26, 2010 caused a whirlwind of destruction. Fallen trees damaged, among other things, a garden shed, also a shelter at a bus stop and a caravan was torn away.

Welzheim was since 1911 endpoint of the Wieslauftal line of Schorndorf. The Royal Württemberg State Railways built the station building as a unit train station of type IIIb. The center of the town is the church square with the Protestant St. Gallus Church. Welzheim has many inns, sports facilities, a city park, a jogging path at 2.6 km across the layer nearest to the city park forest area, as well as a self-governing youth center, which is operated by the Welzheimer Youth Initiative eV.
