Geographical location

Wernberg is Ossiacher Tauern mountains, east of Villach and between Ossiach ( in the north), Wörthersee (in the east ) and Faak (in the south of its territory).

History

The municipal area was probably inhabited in ancient times, what relics of Roman reliefs and constructions indicate that were found in the parish church of Sternberg and in Föderlach and Gottestal.

The previously oldest documented mention of a town in the municipality is found in a charter of the monastery of St. Paul on the Burg Sternberg (as Sternberc ) from the period around 1170 / 1180th Wern Berg is mentioned in a document dated November 17, 1227 for the first time that determines the demolition of a Draubrücke at Wern Hill and the surrender of the castle Wernberg to the bishopric of Bamberg.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Wernberg takes on local history reference rule. The fourfold crenellated shield stands for the four castles Aichelburg Damtschach, Sternberg and Wernberg. All were owned by the Khevenhüller, was so taken out of their ordinary arms of the golden oak branch. The three eventually star are derived from the coat of arms of the Counts Sternberger.

Coat of arms and flag were presented to the community on April 5, 1995. The flag is blue and yellow with integrated crest.
