West African Power Pool

The West African Power Pool, WAPP short (French: Système d' échanges d' énergie électrique Ouest Africain, EEEOA ) is the interconnection of national electricity companies of the ECOWAS States, based in Cotonou, Benin. The WAPP was founded in 2000.

Task and goal

The WAPP based his work on the following objectives:

  • Creation of an official and broad cooperation among the Member States for the generation and transmission of electrical energy, with the aim to increase the overall power production and the reliability of the networks in the subregion;
  • Increase the reliability and quality of electricity supply in the region;
  • Reduction of network costs in operations;
  • Increase required for the network expansion investment resources through the implementation of cross-border projects;
  • Creating an attractive environment for potential investors;
  • Unification of standards and regulations in the power sector;
  • Creation of reliable and transparent mechanisms for payment processing with energy transactions;
  • General increase of energy supply in the region.

History

The establishment of the WAPP was decided to mark the 22 ECOWAS summit in 1999. Your present form goes back to a bombardment of the 29th ECOWAS Summit on 12 January 2006, the actual founding meeting was held in Cotonou in July 2006.
