The Doors: When You're Strange is an American cinema documentary from 2009 about the rock group The Doors. Directed by Tom DiCillo, the filmmaker. The feature-length documentary traces the development of the band from its foundation to the death of the singer Jim Morrison in mostly chronological order.

The film is based exclusively on contemporary photographs, which are usually mounted in a rapid sequence of cuts, including a university marketing film from Florida State University with the young Jim Morrison ( 1962), a film of Morrison's UCLA study period (1965 ), the television appearances of The Doors of the ' Ed Sullivan Show " (1967 ) to the PBS show " Critique " (1969 ), Studio recording in Los Angeles and excerpts from Paul Ferrara concert film A Feast of Friends (1969). In between sequences from Morrison's unfinished film project are HWY: An American Pastoral ( 1969) cut showing the singer in a Shelby Mustang as a vagrant Highway Killer in the Mojave desert, as well as political and historical recordings of the late sixties of the last century.

The documentary was first shown 17 January 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City ski resort and then another ten American and European film festivals. Since at the Sundance Film Festival criticism of the monotonous voice-over DiCillo had come, the director won for the recasting of narrative sound track U.S. actor Johnny Depp. For the soundtrack recitations recorded by Morrison 's poems with Depp also. The revised film was shown for the first time 21 June 2009 at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was released on April 9, 2010 in the U.S. theaters.

The surviving Doors members who had criticized the presentation of their band by U.S. film director Oliver Stone in the feature film The Doors from 1991 due to numerous artistic freedoms and the representation of the singer as geratenem out of control sociopath, commented very favorably on DiCillo's documentary ( "the true story of the Doors" ).

July 1, 2010 was DiCillo's work entitled The Doors: When You're Strange in the German cinemas. The feature pages of German newspapers discussed the " sensational [n ] Documentary " overwhelmingly positive. The critic of the Süddeutsche Zeitung bordered DiCillo's approach considerably from that of his predecessor from: " The recordings of legendary songs, of, Light My Fire ' are up to, People Strange ', you're so close to it that Oliver Stone's 1991 play resulting film version, however, plenty of eccentric, ridiculous and artificial works. "

The film was awarded in February 2011 in Los Angeles with a Grammy Award in the category "Best Music Video Long ".
