Wilber Morris

Wilber Morris ( born November 27, 1937 in Los Angeles as Wilbur Morris; † August 8, 2002 in Livingston ( NJ ) ) was an American jazz bassist and bandleader.

Morris played drums as a child. In 1954, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he remained until 1962 and moved to bass. During this time he played in San Francisco with artists such as Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Simmons. Then he returned to his native town, where he worked with Horace Tapscott and Arthur Blythe. In 1978 he moved to New York where he played with Billy Bang and David Murray ( particularly in its octet). In his own trio played Dennis Charles and saxophonist Charles Tyler ( in its place later joined David Murray ). 1983 was built on the DIW label the album " Wilber Force". Later he worked with Joe McPhee, Charles Gayle, Butch Morris, John Fischer, Theo Jörgensmann, Alfred Harth, Claude Lawrence, William Parker, Alan Silva, Burton Greene and Rashied Ali. In 2000, he was still the duo released album "Drum String Thing " with drummer Reggie Nicholson on the CIMP label. In 1996 he founded the BMC Trio with Thomas Borgmann and Dennis Charles. In 1998, after the death of Charles from the BMN Trio with Reggie Nicholson was on drums. The BMC / BMN Trio has recorded six CDs, an LP and two double LPs.

Morris leaves a wife and three children Nanae. His younger brother is the musician Butch Morris.
