Wilhelm Nestle

Biography

Wilhelm Nestle was the only son of Obertribunalprokurators Christian Gottlieb Nestle († 1879) and Maria Christiane Steudel († 1889), both of which had already been introduced children from his first marriage in their relationship. His half- brother was the theologian and orientalist Eberhard Nestle. After leaving school, Nestle studied classical philology in Tübingen and Berlin. In 1888 he graduated from the Professoratsexamen and entered the Württemberg school system to a changing positions, including in Heilbronn, Tübingen, Stuttgart and Ulm Maulbronn. There he married in 1899 Klara Neuffer and participated in the same year on study trips to Greece and Italy. In 1900 he took a teaching job as a preceptor in Schwäbisch Hall. There he published his first of numerous works, Euripides, the poet of the Greek Enlightenment, the professor led the Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1902 Schoental reputation, where he taught six years. From 1909 to 1913 he was headmaster at the Karls -Gymnasium Stuttgart, from 1913 to 1919 he was rector of the Heilbronn Charles High School, after which he returned as the third rector back to the Stuttgart Karls- Gymnasium. After his retirement in 1932 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Greek philosophy at the University of Tübingen. After the publication of numerous philological writings in 1940 and 1944, his major works from myth to logos, the self-development of Greek thought from Homer to the Sophists and Socrates and Greek intellectual history from Homer to Lucian appeared depicted in their development from the mythic to rational thinking. In 1947 he was honored by the University of Heidelberg for the myth to logos with Kuno Fischer Prize. In the same year, however, he also began to go blind. In old age of 94 years he died.

Work

The scope of Nestles plant is estimated in the published by his son in 1965 bibliography of his 100th birthday on 34 independent work, 212 essays and papers in journals and newspapers and 628 book reviews. In his estate shall be in addition are still numerous unpublished manuscripts. The focus of his work already form starting with his first work of 1903 fonts for Greek philosophy, where he also with Otto Crusius 1913 the third volume of Friedrich Nietzsche Philologica and a number of other basic works such as the four-volume selection of Greek philosophers, the three -volume work Greek religiosity published in its basic features and main representatives as well as a history of Greek literature. His late 1940 and 1944, caused major works from myth to logos, the self-development of Greek thought from Homer to the Sophists and Socrates and Greek intellectual history from Homer to Lucian, are shown in their development from the mythic to rational thinking as a result of decades of Greek studies evaluated. His late works include theological writings such as The Crisis of Christianity, its cause, its becoming and its significance in 1947.
