Willard (Virginia)

Willard (also known as Willard Crossroads ) is a former unincorporated community in Loudoun County, Virginia, and was formerly on parts of present-day Washington Dulles International Airport.

The village was by Joseph Edward Willard, a Member of the Virginia General Assembly from 1893 to 1901, named. Although Willard was in Loudoun County, Fairfax County, he represented due to the location of the village, which is only 460 meters (1500 feet) was removed from the County boundary. Willard was also a 0.2 km ² of land in Fairfax. His father was Joseph Clapp Willard, of the famous Willard Hotel in Washington, DC owners.

Willard was at the intersection of Willard Road (now Stonecroft Boulevard) with the Sterling Road (now Horsepen Road). This crossing was surrounded by farms, houses, a school, a church, the Willard Store ( until 1907 ) and the Blue Ridge Airfield ( 1938-1951 ). At the beginning of the 20th century, Willard was west of Floris, north of Pleasant Valley and south of Farm Well ( today Ashburn ). Although Willard was best time between 1900 and 1910, it was until 1958 still recognized as a crossroads, as the construction of the Washington Dulles International Airport began.

When Dulles was built, Willard was torn down to make way for the airport terminals and a control tower. Nearby Willards start and runways, hangars, a fire station and parking were built. The Blue Ridge Airport was converted to the main car park, which is located within the " Saarinen Circle". Dulles was an area of 68 km ² attributed to the earlier not only belonged to Willard, but also parts of Chantilly, Pleasant Valley, Sterling and Ashburn, illustrating the immense size of the airport area. Until 1962, most traces of the old streets and buildings have been wiped out and the airport operations could begin. The Willard Road ( Stonecroft Boulevard) was obtained and is used today for private access and transport inside the airport between the start and runways 1L/19R and 1R/19L.
