William Candidus
William Candidus ( born July 25, 1840 in Philadelphia, † April 1910 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German -American tenor.
Life
Candidus was the son of a German immigrant to the U.S. and was first formed as an instrumental musician. Besides his work in the Steinway company he worked in choirs as a soloist, first on a self-taught basis until he was advised in 1867 in Der Freischütz for professional vocal training after a performance as Max.
Trained by Konaptczek in Berlin, Candidus officially debuted in 1874 at the court theater in Weimar and was first at the Court Theater Hannover ( 1874-75 ) and at the Stadttheater Hamburg ( 1875-76 ) involved. Guesting on to Berlin, Munich, Germany, England and the USA. From 1880 to 1885 he was then a member of the newly founded Opera House Frankfurt am Main.
He went for a few years back to North America where he was engaged in the 1885-1887 American National Opera Company. After his return he was in the season in 1889/90 again at the Opera of Frankfurt am Main. Candidus was appreciated not only as an opera, but also as a concert and oratorio singer, such as Evangelist in the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach.
