William E. Gortney

Gortney William Evans ( born September 25, 1953 in La Jolla, California) is an admiral of the United States Navy ( USN) and since September 14, 2012 Commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command ( USFLTFORCOM ) based on the Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

Previously, he served between July 2010 and August 2012 as Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ( DJS ) in the Defense of the United States.

Education and Career

Gortney graduated in 1977 his studies at a private university in Elon, North Carolina, with a bachelor's degree in history and political science, and even joined in the same year as an officer cadet in the U.S. Navy, where he for a year at the Naval Air Station Pensacola for Naval Air was formed. By 1980 he was at the Naval Air Base Beeville, Texas, stationed, then to 1984 with 82 squadron on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

This was followed by three and a half years at the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, California, where he received a promotion to lieutenant commander before he was again transferred to an aircraft carrier, this time the USS Theodore Roosevelt, on which he remained until 1989. During the 1990s, followed by different uses of the sea, such as on the USS Forrestal ( 1989-92 ) and again the Theodore Roosevelt ( 1992-95 ) and on land, as at the Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Florida, ( 1996-97 ) and the Joint Chiefs of staff (1998-99 ). Gortney served between 1999 and 2004 in various positions abroad, mainly in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Gortneys additional training includes a master's degree in International Security Policy from the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Iceland (1996). As a flyer Gortney came during his career to more than 5,300 flying hours, primarily on the patterns A-7 and F/A-18.

Service as a flag officer

As a flag officer Gortney already served in several functions within the jurisdiction of USFLTFORCOM. Between 2004 and 2006 he served with the rank of Flotillenadmirals as deputy chief of staff for Global Force Management and Fleet Operations, then from 2007 to 2008 under promotion to Rear Admiral ibid. as commander of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and the associated 10 aircraft carrier battle group ( CSG 10), with whom he also took part in the second Iraq war.

After he was appointed vice-admiral, he commanded from 2008 onwards, first the U.S. Cetral Command imputed U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and the associated stationed in the Persian Gulf U.S. 5th Fleet, and then was on 1 July 2010 as Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff transferred to the Ministry of Defence.

On January 23, 2012 U.S. President Barack Obama Gortney nominated to succeed Admiral John C. Harvey as commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command; confirmed by the Senate took over the command Gortney finally on 14 September of the same year, coupled with the appointment as admiral.
