William H. Murfree

William Hardy Murfree (* October 2, 1781 in Hertford County, North Carolina; † January 19, 1827 in Williamson County, Tennessee ) was an American politician. Between 1813 and 1817 he represented the state of North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Murfree was the uncle of acting for the State of Tennessee Congressman David W. Dickinson ( 1808-1845 ). He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1801. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Edenton to work in this profession. In addition Murfree was engaged in agriculture. Politically, he joined the Democratic- Republican Party.

In the years 1805 and 1812 Murfree was elected to the House of Representatives from North Carolina. In the congressional elections of 1812, he became the first constituency of North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Lemuel Sawyer on March 4, 1813. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1817 two legislative sessions. The first these tenures was still influenced by the events of the British -American War. Since 1815, Murfree was chairman of the Committee for the control of public expenditure.

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives he lived until 1823 in Murfreesboro. In that year he moved to the Williamson County in Tennessee, where he owned an estate. There he is on January 19, 1827 and passed away.
