William IV, Duke of Jülich-Berg

William of Jülich- Berg ( January 9, 1455 *, † September 6, 1511 ) was when William III. Duke of Berg and as William IV Duke of Jülich and Count of Ravens mountain.

Life

William was the son of the Duke Gerhard von Jülich -Berg and Sophie of Saxe- Lauenburg. After the death of his father in 1475, he joined to his successors.

He married in 1472 Countess Elisabeth of Nassau -Saarbrücken, daughter of John of Nassau- Saarbrücken. She brought a rich heritage into the marriage, but died in 1478 or 79 in a second marriage in 1481 William of Brandenburg Sibylle took to wife. Both marriages produced no sons, so that there was the question of the succession of Jülich- Berg- Ravens mountain.

Therefore, the so-called Klever Union 1496 completed and thus the connection of the duchies of Jülich- Berg ( - Ravens mountain) and Kleve - Mark to Jülich- Kleve -Berg initiated: William's only daughter, 5- year-old Maria, and the 6 -year-old Johann, son and heir of Duke John II of Cleves, were engaged with each other, 1510 was followed by the wedding.

William died in 1511, with him ended the house Jülich. He is buried last Bergischer ruler in Altenberg Cathedral. He was succeeded by his son John, who in 1521 also inherited Cleves - Mark.
