Wim Suurbier

Wim Suurbier ( born January 16, 1945 in Eindhoven ) is a former Dutch football player.

Career

Association

Suurbier was already in the youth teams of Ajax Amsterdam before he slipped into the first team of the club 1964/65. For Ajax defender was active in the next thirteen years and won many national and international titles. His first success was Suurbier in the second year as a pro, winning the Eredivisie. This title he successfully defended his team twice. Through successes in the KNVB Cup in 1967 and 1970, the domestic double was won in these years. His most successful period with the Amsterdam club tradition, however, should be 1970-1973. Again, the team was League Champion three times (1970, 1972.1973 ) and three-time Cup winner ( 1971-1973 ). In addition, for the first time the European Champions Cup was won. This success was defended in 1972 and 1973. With the triumph in the UEFA Super Cup and World Cup international Triple 1972 won. In all finals at the European Cup, later to become the UEFA Champions League, was Suurbier on the court and completed each of the full 90 minutes.

After this time, the defensive player moved to the Bundesliga for FC Schalke 04, where he came, however, until 13 matchday match against Hamburger SV for the first use of the " Royal Blues ". After only one year, it came to re- transfer and Suurbier stood in the services of FC Metz. But even there it took him only one season before moving to the United States to the Los Angeles Aztecs. In 1980 he returned briefly to the Netherlands and played for half a year for Sparta Rotterdam. After the end of the lending transactions, the defender went back to Los Angeles. The following year, Suurbier represented the colors of the Golden Bay Earthquakes. After a short pause, the Dutch 1983/84 played a final season as a professional with Seiko in Hong Kong.

National

For the Dutch national team, he scored 3 goals in 60 games. Suurbier was in the 1970s, long time regulars of the Dutch national team. He participated in the Soccer World Cup 1974 in Germany and part played in this tournament in all games of the Netherlands. In the final he defeated Germany 1-2. In the European Football Championship 1976, he reached the semifinals, where the Netherlands were subject against Czechoslovakia. With the Football World Cup 1978 in Argentina, he reached the finals again. However, the Netherlands defeated in the final against hosts Argentina 1:3. However, in this tournament Suurbier was no longer a regular player.
