Winfried Bönig

Winfried Bönig (* 1959 in Bamberg ) is a German organist and professor. He is organist at the Cologne Cathedral and Professor of artistic organ playing and improvisation and Director for the Catholic church music at the Musikhochschule in Cologne.

Life

After the first organ lessons at the Bamberg cathedral organist Wolfgang Wünsch Winfried Bönig studied from 1978 to 1984 at the Munich Academy of Music organ, conducting and church music with Franz and Fritz Lehrndorfer Schieri. The examinations in church music and organ, which he completed with distinction in 1982, followed in 1984 the awarding of the master class diploma. He was in Musicology at the University of Augsburg Dr. phil 1993. doctorate.

From 1984 to 1998, Bönig organist and conductor at the Catholic Parish Church of St. Joseph in Memmingen. Where he led performances of great orchestral masses and presented in concert cycles the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Max Reger and Olivier Messiaen dar. 1995, the Culture Prize of the city of Memmingen was awarded to him.

Since 1998 Bönig professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, since 2001 organist at the Cologne Cathedral. In addition to teaching and the tasks of Domliturgie he performs at the Domorgeln as well as at home and abroad. Among the best known and most visited organ concert series around the world include the twelve summery organ ceremonies in the cathedral, of which three of Bönig itself, the other conducted by renowned guest organist.

Several contemporary composers have dedicated Bönig own compositions that were premiered by him, so Enjott Schneider, Jean Guillou, Stephen Tharp, Robert HP Platz, John shield and Colin Mawby.
