Geography

Geographical location

It lies at the foot of the Grossglockner massif between Schober, Goldberg and Kreuzeckgruppe in the upper Moelltal. The villages lie Winklerns 900-1650 meters above sea level. Winklern is called " the Hohe Tauern National Park Gate" due to its geographical location also.

History

Winklern was first documented in 1041-1060. Today's municipal area was at that time in the territory of Salzburg and Brixen bishops. Together with its neighboring Reintal that was already there was a market, Winklern came to 1213 rule of the Counts of Gorizia - Tyrol, who established a customs station here. Its location on the Iselsberg made ​​Winklern an important place as a lifting point for customs duties and tolls.
