Winnie Ewing

Winnie Ewing, actually Winifred Margaret Ewing, (* July 10, 1929 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party. It is one of the most famous Scottish politicians and received during her time in the European Parliament the nickname Madame Ecosse (French for "Mrs. Scotland "). Winnie Ewing is the mother of Fergus Ewing politician and the politician Annabelle Ewing and the mother of Margaret Ewing. Ewing visited the Battlefield School and the Queens Park Secondary School. Then she went to the University of Glasgow and studied law. After acquiring her approval, she worked as a solicitor.

House of Commons

After the resignation of Labour politician Tom Fraser 1967 elections in the constituency of Hamilton were recognized in the year to which Ewing ran as candidate of the SNP. In the previous general election in 1966 Fraser had won the direct mandate with a vote share of 71.2 % against the candidate of the Conservative Party. As the only SNP politicians it was up to this time Robert McIntyre succeeded in re-election in April 1945 in the constituency of Motherwell to win a parliamentary seat for the SNP. Nevertheless, Ewing sat in the election by the Labour candidate against Alexander Wilson and moved into the British House of Commons. Their victory is regarded as paving the way for the subsequent rise of the SNP. At the general election in 1970 Ewing lost its mandate to Alexander Wilson. At the general election in February 1974 Ewing won the direct mandate of the constituency of Moray and Nairn and could defend in the general election in October the same year. In 1979 she lost her mandate to Alexander Pollock.

European Parliament

In the European elections in 1979 Ewing was a candidate in the newly created constituency of the Highlands and Islands and won the direct mandate. She defended her mandate in the elections in 1984, 1989 and 1994. At the European elections of 1999 the constituency was dissolved, so that Ewing was only deputy for the Highlands and Islands in the European Parliament. On the basis of its commitment to the defense of Scottish interests Ewing Madame Ecosse was named in Scotland and enjoyed high reputation. From 1979 to 1987 Ewing was also Vice -President of the SNP, 1987-2005 President.

Scottish Parliament

1999 Ewing competed at the Scottish Parliament elections to one of the seven mandates of the Highlands and Islands electoral region. On the basis of the election result she reached the in the newly created Scottish Parliament. As the oldest member of parliament, she opened the first session of Parliament since 1707.
