Winter & Winter
Winter & Winter is an independent record label in Munich, which tracks both in jazz and classical and new music is at home and generally a cross-border approach.
General information on the label
Winter & Winter was founded in 1995 by Stefan Winter as the successor of the label JMT ( Jazz Music Today ), after he had sold the latter to Polydor KK (Japan). The label took over artists from JMT and additionally built from the stylistic bandwidth by as a second pillar put on productions in the fields of classical and new music. This step is similar to the Munich -based ECM also in the label, which also started with jazz and eventually created a new ECM New Series for classical and contemporary music. Winter & Winter is decreased compared to other labels over the years in its spectrum, especially in the width ( movies, audio books, etc.) and published recordings that bring together different styles of music ( a special exponent here is Uri Caine ) or in terms of a musical style only are difficult to categorize, such as some of the theme-based projects.
Winter & Winter brings only one publication per month out, however, that so far already could for example consist of a CD box or different media comprehensive special edition usually. Due to this limited release frame all the artists of the label can not keep their shots in a regular sequence so as to accommodate for larger labels; associated with the label musicians such as Noël Akchoté and Fred Frith have released most of their plates at other labels, Paul Motian has housed a recording of his renowned trio once during ECM.
Winter & Winter became known also by its cover design, rather than the usual plastic CD trays is consistently placed on cardboard, the design comes from a small tribe designers. The rights to the recordings of JMT were bought back by Stefan Winter and formed the basis for the JMT Edition, in which over a period of three years, all recordings were re-released remastered.

Each shot of the label is part of a particular edition:
- Music Edition - images in the fields of jazz, classical and new music
- JMT Edition - remastered recordings of all previous labels
- Audio film - theme-based projects ( countries, cities, musical styles and composers, establishments, etc.)
- Literature Edition - Audio Books
In the early years of the label, there was a division into a Basic ( up to and including the 20th century ) New ( contemporary ) and Artist Edition ( improvised music).

All three started their career at JMT, before they switched to other labels.

- The name Winter & Winter is based on the original desire Stefan Winters involve his brother, but this proved to be impossible.
- The publications can be purchased through a subscription.
- Since July 2000, Winter & Winter presents works of artists who are involved in the cover design, the Munich district of Schwabing.
