Włodzimierz Smolarek (* July 16, 1957 in Aleksandrów Łódzki, † March 6, 2012 Aleksandrów Łódzki ) was a Polish football player.

Career

The tricky Left Wing Smolarek played in Poland Widzew Łódź and during his time in the army at Legia Warsaw. With Widzew he won in 1981 and 1982, the Polish Championship. He played here in a team with the big star of this time Zbigniew Boniek and was nominated for the cadres of the Polish national team for FIFA World Cup 1982 in Spain. Smolarek scored two goals after brilliant individual actions in Leipzig against the East (Poland won 3-2 ), which allowed Poland's appearance in Spain. In Spain, he was part of the team that after 1974 for the second time was in third place. After the departure of Boniek to Juventus he was also the top scorer in Widzew. In 1985, he won the Polish Cup with Widzew and participated in the World Cup 1986 in Mexico part. Here divorced his team in the second round with 0:4 against Brazil. After the tournament, he moved to the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt, where the technically strong dribbler quickly became one of the most popular players of Eintracht. In 1988 he won with the Frankfurt DFB Cup and went after this season to Feyenoord Rotterdam. After two years at Feyenoord he moved to FC Utrecht, where he played until his retirement in late 1996 at the age of 39 years.

After his career end Smolarek coached by 2009 the junior team of Feyenoord, where he also trained his son Euzebiusz, who moved to Borussia Dortmund later. He most recently served as a scout for the Polish association. Smolarek played a total of 60 caps for Poland and was in nine games Mannschaftskäpitän. He spoke fluent Dutch.

After his death the stadium to be named in Aleksandrów Łódzki by Smolarek.
