Woodlawn Cemetery (Bronx)

The Woodlawn Cemetery is a cemetery in the north of the Borough of the Bronx in New York City. With an area of over 160 acres and approximately 300,000 graves he is one of the largest cemeteries in the city.

The park-like grounds in the Bronx River Valley was designed by the architect James C. Sidney and 1863 taken as a cemetery in operation after funerals at the city 's population had arrived in rural areas from the borders of the city in fashion. A secondary function as a recreational park was mitvorgesehen from the outset. 1776 had George Washington have on the later cemetery a redoubt against the advancing British troops building, which today is located at the south end of the cemetery.

Three-quarters of the land had existed until the 19th century from farmland, the rest was wooded. Sidney designed a vast park cemetery with hills, wooded sections, a lake and a branched network of paths, the largest of which are passable by car today. The design should be the romantic ideal of naturalness. The surrounding area was not yet built at that time, but easily accessible from Manhattan. Today, the Bronx closes just south of the cemetery, which closes the New York metropolitan area to the north.
