Worcester, Nashua and Rochester Railroad

The Worcester, Nashua and Rochester Railroad ( WNR ) is a former railway company in Massachusetts and New Hampshire ( United States). It existed as an independent company of 1845 to 1911.

History

The company was initially founded on March 5, 1845, Worcester and Nashua Railroad of Massachusetts. For the section located in the Nashua New Hampshire and Groton Rail Road was founded on 24 December 1844. The two companies merged on November 6, 1846 to Worcester and Nashua Railroad. The construction had already begun on December 18, 1848 and went all the way from Worcester to Nashua in operation.

1847 acquired the Worcester & Nashua Worcester Branch Railroad, which had built a connecting track between the ending in Worcester railway companies. The northern continuation of the route through Nashua addition to Rochester the Nashua and Rochester Railroad was built in 1874. Since you wanted a continuous operation, the Worcester & Nashua leased on April 1, 1876, the Nashua & Rochester. The two companies eventually merged on December 1, 1883 to Worcester, Nashua and Rochester Railroad, which operate exclusively the railway Worcester Rochester.

Shortly thereafter, on New Year's Day in 1886, leased the Boston and Maine Railroad, the WNR and bought it in 1911 finally on. The track Worcester Ayer is still in operation and is used by Pan Am Railways freight traffic. The remaining portion to Rochester is shut down.

Special Events

On December 15, 1855, a boiler explosion of the locomotive Dewitt Clinton, the third built in the U.S. locomotive occurred. Here, the train driver and the heater died.
