XAMPP

XAMPP is a compilation of free software - mainly in the environment of the LAMP system. XAMPP makes it easy to install and configure the Apache web server with MySQL database or SQLite and the scripting languages ​​Perl and PHP ( with PEAR ). The X stands for the different operating systems on which it can be used. XAMPP also contains other useful tools such as the FTP server ProFTPd or FileZilla server, the mail server Mercury, phpMyAdmin, Webalizer and OpenSSL. Since version 1.7.4, the Windows version also includes Apache Tomcat 7, which allows the execution of Java Server Pages and Java servlets.

Features and Functions

The aim of XAMPP is to achieve a particularly easy installation. For Windows systems, there is a version with installation routine for the other supported operating systems (see below) a version with detailed installation instructions. With a few clicks you get server tools that alone would require some quite long configuration times.

XAMPP is not (eg as a public web server ) is intended for use as a production system, but for developers who want to set up a compact test system as quickly as possible. This also explains the consciously accepted restrictions in regard to the safety of XAMPP. Failure to heed this warning led for example to Patras hack at the federal police in July 2011.

Under Linux XAMPP installed completely into the directory / opt. Since most distributions Apache, PHP and MySQL installed by default ( eg / usr / bin or / usr / sbin ), it is advisable to these packages before installing XAMPP completely uninstall in order to avoid confusion.

Originally, the respective versions were called in response to the supplied operating system thought LAMPP (Linux), MAMPP (MAC ) or WAMPP (Windows). Because of the potential confusion and the establishment of a standardized product name, all future packages will be referred to only as XAMPP.
