Xenophontos monastery

The Monastery Xenofontos (Greek: Ξενοφώντος ) is one of the twenty Orthodox monasteries of Mount Athos in the northwest of the peninsula Chalkidiki in Greece. It is dedicated to Saint George, whose Votivfest on 23 April ( Orthodox Calendar May 6 ) is celebrated. In 1990 the monastery was one of 57 monks. Today, it stands to sixteenth place in the hierarchy of the Athos monasteries, in Manuel II Palaiologos Typikon of 1406 took the eighth.

The monastery was founded in the late 10th century by the monk Xenophon, the first written record dates from 998 ownership on the Holy Mountain and on the mainland could not prevent multiple crises towards the end of the 13th century, the monastery was of " Italian pirates " destroyed. During the Turkish occupation the monastery was supported by the Danubian Principalities. Among the art treasures include several icons from the 12th century. A special feature of the monastery is that in the courtyard there are two churches. The older Catholicon dates from around 1000, the local wall paintings from the 14th to the 16th century. The newer Catholicon was built at the beginning of the 19th century, it is one of the largest churches on Mount Athos.
