Yadgir ( Kannada: ಯಾದಗಿರಿ Yadagiri [ja ː d̪əɡiri ]; Yadagiri also ) is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka with 60,000 inhabitants ( 2001 census). It is the administrative seat of the district of Yadgir.

Yadgir is located in northeastern Karnataka 490 km north of the capital Bangalore and 85 kilometers south-east of Gulbarga. At the border of the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh there are only 35 kilometers. The city is located in the Deccan Plateau at an altitude of 380 meters. In Yadgir rises from the otherwise flat surrounding a single steep cliffs, on top of which stands a fortress. A few kilometers southwest of the Bhima River at Yadgir flows past.

The name Yadgir ( Yadagiri ) derives from the dynasty of the Yadava and the word giri for " mountain". The Yadava ruled from the 9th to the 14th century by Devagiri out of the area and to the fort Yadgir have built. Later Yadgir was under the rule of the Bahmani Sultanate of Bijapur Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, to 1724 before it was now independent state Hyderabad. During the British colonial era Hyderabad existed until 1947 as a nominally independent princely state under British suzerainty on. After Indian independence Yadgir 1956, by the States Reorganisation Act for the State of Mysore (1973 renamed Karnataka ). Formerly a part of the district of Gulbarga, Yadgir is since 2010 the administrative seat of its own district.

By Yadgir State Highway 16 leads from Raichur after Bidar. Situated on the main route between Mumbai and Chennai, Yadgir has good rail connections.
