Year of the Devil is a Czech fictional documentary about the life of singer-songwriter Nohavica.

Action

A Dutch filmmaker spins in the Czech Republic a documentary about a sanitarium for alcoholics. In this sanatorium, he met the Czech songwriter Nohavica know without knowing that this man is a legend in the Czech Republic. The poet, musician and friend Nohavicas Karel Plíhal is indeed not an alcoholic, but the seclusion and security of the sanatorium he likes it so much that he decides to stay there. Since this is not possible for a non-drinker, he developed other phobias - to total silence. Plíhal wants from his friend Nohavica that this Čechomor occurs with the wedding and funeral folk group. Nohavica seeks contact with the band members, which also have a range of Jaz Coleman ( Killing Joke ), perform with the Philharmonic. However, the band opts for the legend Nohavica. The film follows the band for one year from gig to gig and approaches so Nohavica and shows the rise of a completely unknown folk band to national heroes. At the same time, he deals with the demons of alcohol and myths of a entmystifierten everyday life.

Background

The film belongs to the Czech Republic to the most popular films of recent years. After its theatrical release on March 7, 2002, he reached 100,000 viewers in the Czech Republic within 8 weeks. In the summer of the same year he won the International Film Festival of Karlovy Vary and was subsequently shown at numerous international film festivals.

Awards

In addition to the victory in Karlovy Vary, the film won the 2003 six Czech Lions ( Czech Film Awards ), including Best Picture film of the year. In the Film Festival Cottbus he had on November 2, 2002 and received its German premiere at the festival the FIPRESCI Prize. Petr Zelenka also received the boulder - price.
