Year of the Dolphin

The UN called in 2007 of the International Year of dolphins after 15 States had signed the Convention called on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS ), also the Bonn Convention. With the year of action the objectives of the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals and the public should be made known. The opening ceremony was held in Shimoni, Kenya. The main focus was on the areas around the Canary Islands, the Azores, the coast of West Africa. During the year, meetings of politicians, scientists and Öffentlichkeitskampanien of NGOs took place to do so.

The background is the threat to these marine mammals by humans. It is part of the UN Decade of Biodiversity 2000-2010 of the United Nations. The patron was Prince Albert II of Monaco.
