Yelets

Yelets (Russian Елец ) is a city with 108 404 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian Lipetsk Oblast.

Geography

Yelets is located on the Bystraja Sosna, a right Don Creek, approximately 80 km west of the regional capital Lipetsk and 350 km south- southeast of Moscow. Nearest city Zadonsk 37 km south-east.

History

Yelets was mentioned in 1146 as a fortress city for the first time. 1395 and 1414 it was destroyed by the Mongols, after which it remained desolate. In the 17th century Yelets was repopulated as a commercial and administrative center of a fertile Black Earth region.

In the city there are many impressive buildings, very gorgeous, among other things, the Assumption Cathedral of the famous Russian architect Konstantin Thon.

Economy and Transport

Today Yelets transportation hub and center of Rajons same name. It lies on the Russian highway from Moscow to Novorossiysk M4. Economically dominate agriculture and the processing of their products in mills, tanneries and food manufacturing companies.
