Yosef Almogi

Yosef Aharon Almogi ( יוסף אהרון אלמוגי, born May 5, 1910 as Joseph Karlenboim in Hrubieszów, Russian Empire, now Poland, † November 2, 1991 in Haifa) was an Israeli politician.

Life

Almogi was born on 5 May 1910 at the Russian Empire. He worked for the Haganah in Kfar Saba, Tel Aviv (1936) and Haifa ( 1937). In 1940 he enrolled in the British Army and fought in World War II in Greece against Nazi Germany. On April 30, 1941, he arrived with his unit in German captivity.

After the war he returned to Israel and became active as a politician in David Ben- Gurion's Mapai. He was from 1959 to 1961 Secretary General of Mapai. Almogi was from 1955 to 1977 member of the Knesset and Ben- Gurion since October 1962 Minister for Construction and Housing and Development Minister. When Levi Eshkol 1963 Premier was in, Almogi kept both ministerial posts. In 1976 he was also chairman of the Jewish Agency. He died on November 2, 1991 in Haifa.
