Yossi Melman
Yossi Melman ( b. 1950 in Poland) is an Israeli author and journalist.
Melman emigrated to Israel in 1957 and joined the youth organization Hashomer Hatzair there of to. Later he graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in History and International Relations and Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. He is a correspondent for the liberal Haaretz newspaper for the military and intelligence topics.
Politics
Melman expressed that he sees himself in the left spectrum, and that Israel must leave the occupied territories in order to live in peace with a Palestinian state. However, he is also of the opinion that the Palestinians no right of return should be given, as this would make the idea of a two-state solution in the minds of Israelis void.
In an interview with the Austrian newspaper Der Standard on Iran and its nuclear program, he said when asked whether he critically see the negotiations between the Austrian company OMV and Iran, as follows: " Although I understand the Austrian dilemma in energy Interests: The gas Deal of the OMV would have to be moved or at least negotiated differently. Austria would have had to ask for anything in return, concessions. One would have to be much harder. Actually, we are towards Iran much too soft - just think of the Swiss President, who is running around in Tehran with the headscarf. The signal is: We respect you, but do not expect again that you also respect us. Austria should follow the German example. Germany is the best ally of Israel, better than the U.S. because of the German support for Israel no interests are tied "
In an article for Haaretz itself Melman stated that if he had Benjamin Netanyahu's security adviser, would advise him to attack Iran.
Awards
Melman won in 2008 the Sokolow Prize for print and electronic media in commemoration of Nachum Sokolow for his report on a Jordanian Palestinian who was illegally detained by American, Israeli and Jordanian security services.
