Zaanse Schans

The Zaanse Schans is a village in the municipality of Zaanstad, located across from Zaandijk on the Zaan. Approximately 900,000 visitors annually visit this open-air museum, with the idea to show the historical heritage of the Netherlands, built.

The name Schans is reminiscent of the same jump, the 1574 Diederik Sonoy, a governor under William I, Prince of Orange, was built against the Spanish invaders.

Between 1961 and 1974 many old buildings have been transported out of the Zaan region after the Zaanse Schans, rebuilt and restored to its original state. The existing on-site windmills have been restored. Old buildings were erected there again and again in the later years.

Visitors can several old houses, including the first store of Albert Heijn ( Dutch supermarket chain) visit. In addition to the souvenir shops can be a cheese factory, a shipyard, a wooden shoe workshop, a bakery museum Zaanse Clock Museum and the world's only paint mill De Kat visit. Area is next to the outdoor area the Zaans Museum, the first industrial area provides an insight into the development of the Zaanstreeks. Products produced on the premises, mustard, cheese, pastries, etc., you can buy there.

  • These mills are all on the east bank of the Zaan. Other mills, mostly pasture mills are erected on the site. Opposite stands on the other side of the road the oil mill De Ooijevaar ( German: The stork ) and on the other bank of the Zaan the grain mill De ( Bleeke ) Dood.
  • The entrance to the outdoor area is free, but you have to pay at the mills and other sights entry.
