Zahlé

Zahle, also Zahla or Zahleh, Arabic زحلة Zahla, DMG Zaḥla; is the capital of the province Bekaa in Lebanon. The more than 150,000 inhabitants are almost exclusively Christian faith.

Location

Zahle is situated about 52 kilometers east of Beirut and 7 kilometers north of Chtaura, the branch on the road from Beirut to Damascus, on the eastern slope of Jebel Sannin. This limits the Bekaa Valley in the west. The city is crossed by the river Bardaouni.

Climate

The climate in Zahle very different from the Lebanese on the coast: it is dry and mild to hot in summer and cold to very cold, including snow and frost in winter. This climate, the city on the one hand an altitude of 1010 meters above sea level, on the other hand, due to the separation of the coastal region through the mountains.

Tourism

At the north end of town is the Wadi El- Aarayesh ( "Valley of Wine" ), where you can enjoy typical Lebanese cuisine restaurants on both sides of Bardaouni - especially the mezze or Meza, the typical appetizer plate. These typically the alcoholic Anisgetränk Arak is enjoyed. In and around Zahle excellent wine and arak are made. Particularly interesting are the wine cellars in the suburb of Ksara (→ Château Ksara ). From Zahle, it only takes about 30 minutes in the city of Baalbek with your important Roman monuments. The city of Anjar with its Arab monuments is about 15-20 minutes away.

Meaning of the name

About the origin of the name is speculated. The most plausible theory is that the name derives from the Arabic word Zahala, which means slide or slip. In fact, find in the City occasionally landslides take place that could have been the origin of the naming.
