Žakovce

Žakovce ( Eisdorf German, Hungarian Izsákfalva - to 1892 Zsakóc ) is a municipality in the north of Slovakia with 856 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Kežmarok, a part of the Prešov Region and is counted to the traditional landscape Zips.

Geography

The municipality is located in the hilly part of the basin Popradská kotlina, a part of the larger Podtatranská kotlina between Levočské mountains to the east and the Tatra Mountains to the west. By Žakovce the Bach Žákovský creek flows. The center is located at an altitude of 671 m nm and is eight kilometers from Kežmarok and 14 km from Poprad.

History

Žakovce is one of the oldest places in the landscape Zips and was mentioned in 1209 as Villa Isaac writing. After the Mongol invasion in 1241, German "guests" settled in the town. The village belonged to collar the Saxons, after 1412, since it was not pledged to Poland to collar the 11 Zipser cities. Nevertheless, the village lost its importance and sank in 1465 in response to the Spis Castle.

1828 are 99 houses and 718 inhabitants recorded, who were employed in agriculture, but also in mining of copper and mercury.

Until 1918, belonged to the county located in the Zips place the Kingdom of Hungary and came after Czechoslovakia and Slovakia today. At the end of the Second World War, the German inhabitants were deported and instead Žakovce was inhabited by the Slovaks from Blazov and other surrounding villages.
