Zaozyorsk

Saosjorsk (Russian Заозёрск ) is a closed town in Murmansk Oblast in Russia with 11,199 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is inhabited mainly by members of the Russian armed forces in connection with the U- boat fleet from the nearby harbor Sapadnaja Liza, the main base of the Russian Northern Fleet.

Description

Saosjorsk was founded as a place of residence for members of the Soviet submarine fleet in 1958. In Soviet times it was a closed city under the code name Severomorsk -7 ( Североморск - 7) and Murmansk -150 ( Мурманск -150) known. The climate in the city is extremely inhospitable and characterized by a long polar winter and strong winds.

Saosjorsk lies 54 km towards north-northwest away from the regional center of Murmansk, on roads, the distance 150 km. The majority of the population serves in the Russian armed forces or work in firms of Defense.
