Zeelandic Flanders

Zeeland Flanders ( Zeeland Flanders ) is a part of the Netherlands south of the estuary of the Scheldt River on the border of the Belgian region of Flanders. Zeeland Flanders borders here mainly to the province of East Flanders in the south but also has contact with the province of West Flanders. Historically Zeeland Flanders forms part of the county of Flanders, but it was conquered by the troops of the Seven United Provinces and then belonged as part of the Generality to the dominated of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands.

Today it is the most southern part of the Dutch province of Zeeland. The territory comprises the three communities Terneuzen, Hulst and Sluis. Terneuzen is with more than 50,000 inhabitants, the largest city in the province, the capital of Middelburg, and also has the third largest seaport in the Netherlands.

With the northerly peninsula Zuid- Beveland the area of Zeeland Flanders is connected via the Westerschelde tunnel since 2003. Eg Aardenburg, Breskens, Cadzand Cadzand -Bad, Nieuwvliet, Oostburg, Retranchement are important for tourism towns (all belonging to the municipality of Sluis ).

The area around Terneuzen in the center of Zeeland Flanders originally formed an island that was inhabited by Axel ago and was therefore characterized Calvinist. She was joined only by diking with the mainland. The East (by Hulst ) and the west ( to Sluis ) already belonged originally mostly for Flanders mainland, after which they were based, which is why these areas are dominated Catholic.
