Zhigulyovsk

Schiguljowsk (Russian Жигулёвск ) is a city in Samara Oblast (Russia) with 55,565 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is situated on the northern edge of the Volga arc Samarskaja Luka with the Schigulibergen, about 90 km west of the Oblasthauptstadt Samara on the right bank of the Volga River, which is dammed here to Kuibyshev reservoir.

Schiguljowsk the Oblast is administratively subordinated directly. Moreover, five villages with a total population of 4,975 are directly managed by the city, so that the total population of the administrative unit Schiguljowsk city is 62 412 (calculated 2009).

The city is located on the 1961 opened, electrified railway line Sysran - Samara ( on the left bank of the Volga More Schiguljowskoje where the short branch line branches off to the near Togliatti ). History

In place of the present town and the villages Morkwaschi Otwaschnoje have been known since 1647 or 1840. In the 19th and early 20th century, this idyllic part of the Volga shore was a popular haunt of poets and painters. So Ilya Repin worked in Morkwaschi 1870 his famous picture The Wolgatreidler.

In the 1940s emerged with the discovery of oil deposits workers Otwaschny settlement, which received in 1946 the status of an urban-type settlement. 1949 the company merged with the surrounding villages and renamed Schiguljowsk, after the ridge south of the village.

2004, the former urban-type settlement was Jablonewy Owrag (Russian for apple tree canyon) incorporated northwest of the city center on the banks of the Volga.

Culture and sights

South of the city, the entire Volga arc occupied by 1984 furnished 134,000 acre National Park Samarskaja Luka practical. The park headquarters is located in Schiguljowsk.

In Schiguljowsk the belonging to GidroOGK Schiguljowsker hydroelectric power plant (formerly Volga - Lenin - W. - I power plant) is a power of 2300 MW. In the surrounding area is sponsored by Samaraneftegaz oil. In several places, limestone is mined. In Jablonewy Owrag district is a cement plant. There are also companies in the electrical engineering and the timber industry.
